Making viewing area bigger in monitor

Hi. I had a 15" monitor, but today someone gave me a 17", which I just finished hooking up. However, the picture doesn't fill the actual screen. How do I go about adjusting it, so that there isn't a black strip on the top and bottom of the screen.

Thanks.

One more question..... I believe there's a way to adjust what the type looks like, but I don't remember how.

I find that on this monitor, the type (print/font) seems a bit flaky looking --- just not quite dark enough or solid enough.

Any ideas on how I can change this?

Thanks.

The monitor has controls on. You enter a setup screen and you can adjust the various settings.

Right click on any open space on your desk top and click properties. Make sure the the proper monitor and driver is selected.

The picture now fills the total screen. Thanks for the input!
