EL wire

Does anyone know what voltage that EL wire for computer cases uses? Is it 5 or 12 volts?

The kits did not have any instructions, just connectors to plug into the appropriate place in the computer. Well, I don't want to use them in a computer so I cut off the connectors. I tried them first on a 12 volt battery and they ran fine. I hooked them up to a 12 Volt regulated DC power supply and within a few seconds.... "BOOM". I've blow up two of the little power supplies and cannot figure out why. It looks like in both cases a capacitor blew up with enough force to blow apart the plastic enclosure around the EL wire's power supply. The BOOM & puff of smoke are pretty cool, but even at $5.99 I'd hate to blow up many more of them. Why are they doing fine on a battery but blowing up on the power supply? I've checked the power supplies output and it is 12.3 volts DC.

Just a guess, but I'd wager that they're made to run on 5 volts.

What did the connector look like that you cut off?
