no sound after booting
i have a compaq presario, model 5400US. have win XP, home edition, sp2. Sound device is OEM, on the motherboard. software is soundmax by analog devices. when i turn on the machine, i have no sound. control panel-sound devices says i have no audio device. in device manager-sound, soundmax is there, no yellow exclamation marks anywhere, and it is set up to use this device. when i uninstall the driver there and reboot, i get the found new hardware window. i let the wizard search for the software, and it finds and sets up soundmax. I then have normal sound, until i reboot, and i am back to no sound. also, in BIOS, onboard sound is enabled. also, i have deleted the software and downloaded the most recent several times. does not help. any ideas?

I agree under the circumstances. One thing about a new sound card purchase, you can always install it on a different computer later on if something goes wrong there later. I personally have never had a sound card on a computer, guess I don't put that much emphasize on what I hear. My wife agrees with me

Tow Guy and Slipshot: Sorry, i should have put in my original post that i have already tried that. tried a creative and dynex card, with the same result. both played, but only after i uninstalled and rebooted, just like the onboard device. Thx for the replys.

Hi Laflaone. When you tried the third party sound cards did you first disable the on board sound card and reboot before installing? Second thought: is your motherboard BIOS upgraded to the latest one? This problem has a familiar logic to it, and I think I've found updating the BIOS helpful in similar circumstances.
If this doesn't help, is one of the third party cards still under warranty? Their tech support people might have info in their knowledge base which helps.
Another thought: are there any other 'sound cards' in the system, like a headset for talking on Skype?
Paul

Paul, yes to your first question. As to BIOS, I have the latest version, but downloaded and reflashed it to make sure it wasn't corrupted. Didn't work. I have already returned the soundcards. Last, there are no other sound cards in the system. The bottom line is that something is preventing the sound driver(s) from loading when I boot the machine.
Thanks for your post.

ok, a thought from the distant past: possible resource conflict? Not likely but.... and thinking that way have you checked under device manager for cautions or red X's?
Another thought ( they just keep coming until the !$%^@$ is fixed. hopefully. ) I install a free tool named startup.exe in the root of all systems I work on. It allows you to shut down 90% of autostart apps ( not services tho ) to free up CPU cycles or speed up the bootstrap process. MSCONFIG can do this however Startup.exe works more smoothly. Have you tried disabling various autostart apps? It really seems familiar, your having a working sound card then not having one upon reboot...
