Makeshift webcam

I think I know the answer, but I would like to see if anyone has been able to creatively hook up a video camera or digital camera, not originally intended to be a webcam, as a webcam.

In a nutshell, I use a DVD express to convert analog movies from our old video camera to digital. I know I can capture the output right to the computer in movie format, but is there software that allows real time use as a webcam?

The same question applies to my Canon digital camera. I believe I can connect it right to the computer and capture the video (I have not tried it yet), but what about capturing the video to use it as a web cam?

I am plan on using it for video messaging on MSN or Yahoo.

Some DV cameras can be used as a webcam with a firewire card. Most analog capture cards can be used with webcam software. I think firewire or USB capture devices should work too.

I know I can use my older BT878 based tuner/capture card over Netmeeting.

All I have to say is try.

It might work, but be aware that many cameras time out, and shut off..
