Verizon Fios
I decided to upgrade to Verizon Fios at the end of August. Does anyone on the boards have this and can provide me with some feedback? Should I order it from the Verizon's website or buy it from one of the Fios salesmen in the area? Could they give me better deals than the site? Are there any known problems with Fios? Thanks in advance

I have had Verizon FIoS for almost a year now. It is wonderful.
I did initially have a problem with my telephones not working after the upgrade (calls would get dropped), but that was eventually rectified and all has been well since.
I understand that Verizon will now allow you to keep your existing copper telephone line if you want, so you may want to consider this. One benefit to keeping your copper line for telephone service is that your telephone will work in a power outage. If you switch your phone over to fiber they do provide a battery (which is constantly charging), but it will not run forever off the battery.
Sign up in whatever way gets you the best deal. I was able to get $10.00 a month savings for the first year (which is almost over). You may or may not be able to get that.
I have the slowest form of FIoS, 5 MBPS download. I could go up to 10 MBPS for an additional $10.00 per month, but have no need for it. Their fastest service is not meant for residences, but they will allow you to get it, if you want to pay them for it.

Thank you very much for the info. I use my cellphone for most of the calls and the power outage issue wont be too much of a problem. I am probably going to buy the 5 Mbps since it does appear to be sufficient for my daily use. How can i find Fios vendors in my area?

You can always call Verizon. However, I have found the best deals to usually be on-line (so everything is automated) or via sales fliers that are mailed or hand delivered.
But, you can (and should) always ask what deals are available if you call them. For example, they won't offer a $10.00 discount per month for the first year unless you ask for it.

I agree. I was actually online trying to get DSL through Verizon (I know this is about Fios but...) I can't order it online. I have to actually call. Thought that was strange but could be b/c they want to try and offer you the Fios.
Speaking of Fios...I don't understand why you would ned anything faster than DSL? No, really...I just don't understand and would like to know why since I'm going to get DSL...if Fios is something way better and the cost is worth it then I'd like to get Fios instead. I'd rather not hear it from the company.

For a single computer where you aren't planning on downloading large files (ie movies), then you probably don't need anything faster than DSL. However, consider multiple computers and multiple downloads at the same time. My household has three computers four if you count my handheld), often all in use at the same time.

Well as of right now I have 56k and I finally decided to upgrade to faster internet. The basic 14.95/month DSL will be faster than what i have now but its slower than cable internet. Cable is similar to the 30/month DLS which is up to 3.0 Mbps. Since I'll be paying at least 30 a month for DSL I might as well add the extra 5 dollars and receive connection speed up to 5.0 Mbps. That is my reasoning in this case.

LOL...this is funny. Since I had to call to order DSL they did in fact tell me about fios. The deal on the site for DSL showed "as low as"...which I didn't read carefully but she pointed it out to as well as the special deal (lowest price) was not available for me or where I am located...so it actually costs me more (but still less than fios). Oh well...I ordered anyway.
