Modem in use
I recently went back to dial-up (kinda silly I know) from dsl and for a year, I haven't used my modem. In that time i went through an overhaul of my computers motherboard and processor. Now that I would like to use my modem, ofcource it doesn't work.
When I try to dial out, I am prompted that the modem is in use by another application. When I use the Device Manager, enter the modem properties, under diagnostic I try to Query the modem, and am gave an error that the modem port is in use by another application.
I have tried closing out all running program, all but what I need to keep the OS running, nothing. I downloaded the newest drivers. I have tried moving the modem around different pci slots and taking all other boards out. I even went so far as to completely reformat my computer. It needed the cleaning up anyway after all that dsl usage. Now with a fresh operating system (XP by the way), it still gives me the same errors.
Any clues???

nova,
Maybe the modem is bad? I had a similar problem with a network card. I did a complete reformat and re-install of the operating system and when I was all done, the PC would not recognize network card. The card worked before the format, so what happened? It drove me nuts for days......finally, I took a chance and bought a new card and it worked. My new PC has the network built-in to the motherboard so hopefully I won't ever have to deal with that problem again....
I'd try a new modem or try that modem on another PC. They do fail.
Good luck,
Phil

usually it's a sound program that will do that. if you wanted to delete your sound card and any associated programs, remove them, then remove the modem, uninstall the drivers/software, then reboot a couple times, then reinstall the modem first. See if that works.

That probably would work, I'm having a ton of conflicts between devices since I reformated, I don't have a clue why. Mainly the problems are with my sound card, usb, and video card. I am trying to get new drivers now from RealTek for my sound, hope that'll clear some things up.
I ended up borrowing the modem out of my parents computer as it was convenient to take since I was installing my network card in their computer. Fair trade I say
. Other than getting drivers for it, its working, modem problems fixed for now.
