Windows doesn't start up automatically

This expands on a previously posted thread.
Each time I start I get a window asking me what kind of startup I want. Normal works, but I would like to fix whatever is causing the B/W window to appear demanding manual intervention. Yesterday I did a repair/install and I've down loaded all updates to XP and Service Pack 2.
I'd appreciate a hint about how to proceed.

Go to "run" on the start menu, type "msconfig" hit enter. Goto the boot.ini tab and make sure the "/safemode" is unchecked. Here is a webpage with pictures detailing the above method.

Windows doesn't start

Thanks for the tip. It is not checked.
I'm probably going to pay a geek to look at my machine. I also have problems with windows and McAfee telling me that pop up blockers are turned off but I still can't get a desired blocker on a trusted website.
