Question error "cannot delete file"

Good Morning: I am having a problem deleting files via *old, *.chk, *.bak, etc. I am getting "cannot delete file: "Cannot read from the source file or disk". There are several in each of the fore mentioned folders. I can go through and delete some files, but the issue files remain with the "cannot delete file" etc. Some of those that I manage to delete, reappear. I have googled for info but what I have found is greek to me. Can anyone help me. My OS is Windows XP. Thank you in advance as always

Well, you haven't mentioned any folders, so we have no idea where these files are located.

Any file that is open in any program (and still marked as open to the OS) will not be able to be deleted. Nor will any folder above that be able to be deleted.

Windows creates many files as it goes along. Any file with a date and time of the current day (more specifically the current computer session) may be impossible to delete.

If the time stamp of these files is not recent, then try deleting them in safe mode.

racraft: The proccedure I am taking is: search for files and folders, looking in "C" drive, for: *.chk. The result is 804mbd1.chk, that will not delete, and there are no other proccess that are using it via unlocker assistant. When I rt click, my only options are open containing folder- copy- extract. The folder is c:\program files\online services' The other search is: _*.*. the result from that search is 162 files. mostly HP stuff, but the same as above.
