Windows XP

Hey Everyone,

It has been along time since I visited this site and I wonder why! "This Is A Great Site"!!! Anyhow, I have a friend that has a desktop computer. Kinda old (Was running 98se). She upgraded to XP! Her memory is 9.6 GB!!! She only has about 1.9 GB left. I have walked her through "Add & Remove", Disk Clean-Up, And so on!!! Still does not have that much space left! My Question is, "How much Space does XP Home Edition require? She had to "TOTALLY" delete 98se!

Thanks Everyone,
Dave

No, her memory is NOT 9.6 GB. Her hard disk space is 9.6 GB. Her memory is something less, much less.

Her machine is NOT suitable for Windows XP. Go back to Windows 98SE, which is a better OS for this machine.

"Thank-You"

Yes, Thank you for correcting me! I did mean "Hard Drive" space!!! So you think that she should go back to 98se?

Thank-You For The Reply,
Dave

Your description of the computer as "kinda old" and the fact that it has a small hard drive, lead me to believe that it probably DOES not meet the basic requirements for Windows XP (and Microsoft's requirements are lower than they should be).

Older computer are best left with their original operating system, rather than trying to load them up with an OS that requires gobs of memory, gobs of hard drive space, and gobs of other resources.

Cable connection

I just talked to her and asked her why she "Upgraded"? She told me that "Cox" could not give her an internet connection without XP! Does that sound right? Because I had Cox Cable when I had 98XP...

No, that is incorrect. Windows 98SE supports networking just fine.

The biggest problem with Win98 is Microsoft no longer supports it..
That's may be why Cox doesn't..
She has a few options..
1. Add more RAM and a larger hard drive to the system to help XP run..
2. Replace the motherboard, RAM, HD, and CPU with something more modern.. Install XP to that..
3. New machine..

Windows XP requires approximately 1.5 GB of available "free space"
for installation. Realistically, you should install XP on a drive or partition
that has a minimum of 4 GB of free space to allow for future updates
or service packs.

Thank-You

Everyone Thank-You,

Racraft, for all the input for sure! (I knew that 98se supported cable, But it had been along time)... "TomTom", That is what I was looking for! The space required for XP!!! She said that is why she upgraded! (Because Cox Cable would not support it, but I knew that was wrong) I think she just wanted to upgrade without knowing! Mind you that I have not even seen the computer itself, everything has been over the phone!!!
Once again, You "ALL" have been very "Incitefull" (Did I spell that right)...

Thanks Again, Dave

I'd put a Linux on it. A lighter install than XP, plus more tolerant of older hardware.

you talked about hard drive space, but shouldn't you upgrade/add RAM to the mix. I hear XP takes more RAM to run than the other platforms?
