Windows XP or Vista?
My parents and in-laws both need new computers (running windows 98 & 95, respectively). Used pretty much just for dial-up surfing and word processing. My understanding is that Microsoft will be bringing out the new OS in January. I would like to buy these people new machines for Christmas. Anyone know of a reason why I would be better to wait for Vista to come out?

Vista has been plagued with issues. I would definetly wait till the OS has been out for some time so they can get the bugs worked out. Stick with XP for now.

Kind of what I figured. I feel like Microsoft turns stuff out to the public before all the bugs are worked out, so your reply was pretty much what I was expecting. Thanks.

Also, if they were content using 95/98 for all those years, then XP should last them for a very long time, especially if their main purpose will be internet and using Office.
Nobody wants to be the Vista guinea pig

Get XP machines.. Vista won't be out till after Xmas anyway, and when it does come out, you can bet your boots that it'll be buggy, and not easy for the average user to fix..

No Rush for Vista
I would also suggest staying with XP and if you have a choice I would opt for the "Professional" version of XP since both "Home" and "Media Center" have their networking guts ripped out
I read Microsoft will be offering Vista "certificates" for sale during the Holidays. The certificates can be exchanged for the OS when it ships. I got a look at Vista beta RC1 and saw nothing that made it a "must-have" for me. The Gartner recommendation for businesses is to wait until at least 2008.
Given what I've read about MS anti-piracy measures in Vista, I may just learn to use linux. I work supporting 1000+ computers and the current WGA has caused significant problems with legitimate licenses. Sorry got off topic, I'll shut up now.
