win me

A friend of mine cannot complete a defrag. I know ME is a horror show but am curious why the defrag says it cannot complete its task. The format reinstall is too much for us so we are going to try to run some a/v programs along with some malware programs. Will the clean up center scan at the Microsoft site work with ME? Thank you

Try these steps. They are for Win98, but try it with ME.

Go to Start > Run
and type msconfig in the Open: box
On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
Hit apply and OK and restart Windows
This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag
Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows

Try to defrag in Safe Mode. Upon restarting the computer press F8 and select Safe Mode, then run defrag.

Windows MyEnemy is an abomination. If you have it, replace it. And then never admit you had it.

It's possible the hard drive doesn't have enough room to do a defrag.. There has to be enough room for files to be moved around before they get placed where they should be..

running anti virus in the background may be causing this issue

turn them off and try again.

We tried in safe mode with no success but wanted you to know when we removed some programs to make more space on the disk as you said, it did defrag in safe mode -thank you.

could you post what program was removed.

it may be the program and not space issue. it would be good tp check this theory in case someone else has enough space but the program is interfering.
