Using XP? Try this..

Start-settings-control panel
Administrative Tools - Services

Scroll down to Print spooler
Right click - properties

Path to executible should say x:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
Startup type should say Automatic..
If it isn't started - start it..

Print spooling is not necessarily required. I suppose that some printer drivers may require it, but not all of them. Print spooling simply means that the job to be printed is saved on the hard drive and then sent to the printer as the printer can handle it. In the mean time, the computer program (such as Word) can go on and do other things, including being terminated. Without spooling, the job is sent to the printer a little bit at a time by the program, and the program cannot be terminated and will respond slower because it taking time (periodically) to service the printer.

Plug n play is not required. Without it you will have to manually tell the computer about any devices you add, such as drives, cameras, etc.
