strange question

i recently got a Dell laptop. Every once in a while when it is running, out of nowhere there is a monkey sound! I have no idea what this is. Can someone enlighten me??? I am hoping it is not a spyware thing.

This sounds (pun intended) like a normal OS sound for Windows XP. Check the sounds that you have configured for the OS.

Well I have had a dell laptop for 4 years and have experimented with all of the sounds and I don't remember any monkey sound. I'm running Windows XP. The only monkey sound I have ever heard was in instant message. Trillian has a monkey sound, but is only initiated in a chat window.

It could be someone on a buddy list signing on or off.

Well, i'd like to say mystery solved, but not quite. I occurs while the computer is running, but idle. The only program that is open is AIM 6.0. i don't think it is a sign on/off sound, because there is no door opening/shutting sound.....still confused, but i guess it isnt a security problem.

birch,

There are many more programs open than AIM. Just because you don't see something on the screen does not mean a program is not open. How many icons are in the system tray? Each icon there represents at least one program.

Why not try it without AIM for a while to see if that is the culprit?

Birch
Check Start - Programs - Startup and see what is there..
I always delete everything there.. It's just shortcuts so it won't hurt anything..

Hi:
I have a similar experience on one of the computers, although it's running really good, except a strange noise that has a sort 'hissing' or like 'wind blowing over the window.' For this, in the past I posted asking what's wrong with this? One of responsers suspected that it's fan inside running or something similar to this, ... I cannot recall it precisely tho'.

In my case, over the months which started right after a purchase, the strange 'hissing' type of noise getting less noticeable to the point where it doesn't bother me at all.

However, in your case, it sounds like more conspicuous noise,... hence it doesn't sound 'fan' running inside the computer. If there is a help on its maker's web-site, you could ask about this by e-mailing what causing this, a strange noise inside the computer.

My mother complained of exactly the same problem. When I looked in Control Panel/Sounds and Multimedia, I found that someone (my dumb brother I suspect had turned on the 'Jungle' theme, tried to turn it off but left a couple of sounds still activated.
