Question boot up problem

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 laptop and when I turn it on it tells me that this file "<windows root>\system32\hll.dll. is corrupt or missing. Please install a new copy of this file."

I do not have a winXP recovery disk, it didnt come with one. I do have my own backups I made when I got the computer but they are not working.

Can anyone help me out and suggest what I can do to fix this?

Thanks!

There are two possible issues here. Your boot.ini could be incorrect or your hal.dll file is missing or corrupt.

Either way, you will need a Windows XP cd.

Once you have the cd, boot to the recovery console.

Steps here:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_run_console.mspx?mfr=true

Once in the recovery console, you need to run:

bootcfg /rebuild

If this does not fix your error, you will need to replace the hal.dll.

Try the bootcfg option first and let us know what happens.

You should have made sure you got one when you bought the PC, and now you know why.

You can borrow one from someone else. Make sure that it is the same flavor as you have installed (Home, Media Center, or Professional).

You can simply get the missing DLL and manually install it. Make sure that you get it from the same flavor of XP that you have.
