You could be in for a whole boatload of fun.. Norton installs itself very deeply into the system.. I had to use Registry Mechanic to get it out..

Try to uninstall in safe mode..
If successful, delete the Norton directory..
After reboot use RM to get rid of registry entries..
See what happens and get back to us here..

There is also some help on the Norton website..

Angry

Trying to get rid of Norton is like trying to get rid of herpes. It may go away, but somethings are bound to crop up later. You can try to cover up the symptoms but the damn thing will just keep coming back.

Good Luck.

OK one more question

Registry Mechanic is that something I can buy or is it someplace in my computer?
Thanks again.

Hi:
I had an exact same issue as yours in the past in terms to removal of Norton.

When the issue came during removing Norton, the Norton-web site popped up in the screen and automatically removed it. In my recollection, however, I tried to remove it two or three times before Norton Removal came to rescue. If it doesn't come to the sreen, try to go to Norton Web-site typing "Norton Removal Tools."

Also, since Norton pre-installed by the HP, try to ask the HP directly how to remove Norton if there is a stubbonness continue. There is 'Live-Chat' in the HP Web-site if you search for 'Customer Care/Contact.'

Like you, my PC is also Windows XP Media Center with Norton pre-installed made by the HP.

Did you try shutting down Norton first? You have to do that to uninstall.

Registry Mechanic is a program that cleans unused entries from the registry.. I've been using it for many years, and have never had a problem.. It does a very good job.. $30 at http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic

You may have to rename the Norton directory before you can delete it.. After renaming, reboot so that the registry entries cannot find the Norton program.. Then you can delete it.. Then use RM to clean the registry..

Here is the Norton Removal Tool:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

And if that doesn't work, here are manual uninstallation instructions:

Sorry for the long links...

outstanding

Quick update I ran the Norton removal tool from the link and it seems to have worked.
I looked for Norton in the add and remove programs and it was gone. So I guess it is and hopefully not lurking in some other spot on my computer.
Thanks all for the great help.
