They will support it for a long time to come. I would guess at least 2 yrs. You can still find some support for Win98

SP3 will be released sometime in 2008.

Support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 will end four years after its general availability. The general availability of Windows XP is for a period of 12 months after the official launch of Windows Vista. Windows XP Licenses will be available for System Builders for 24 months following the official launch of Windows Vista.

You cannot compare Windows 98 with Windows XP.

Windows 98 was written for very different computers than was Windows XP. In the late 90s computers had less memory, slower processors, smaller and slower hard drives, and on and on. Very few, if any, computers originally built for Windows 98 can even run Windows XP with any success.

Yes, Windows XP will be around for a long time, just as Windows 98 will be around for a long time. However, Windows XP will go the same route as Windows 98. Today, you would not install Windows 98 on a new PC, nor can you buy a new PC with Windows 98 on it, at least not a current PC. Eventually Windows XP will be the same way.
