remove windows messnger icon

The icon of two little people will not disappear with outlook express open[xp home sp2].
I tried tools messenger>options >don't appear at startup etc
Also tried right clicking the icon>exit but it says another application is running like outlook express or msie. I know how to remove it but have read it can cause problems.
Google has tons of remedies but none work unless if you get into the registry but I'm not that skilled.
Thnak you

Hi:
I know this/Messenger is a sort of 'Spam' that annoyed me a lot in the past when I didn't know how to get rid of this, 'two greenish characters.'

Try this, below whether it works or not in the first place.

Control Panel < Administer Tool < Service < double click, 'Messenger' <
and then 'Disable'

In precautious measure, however if the computer you've been using is corporate-related, then you may need to get a permission from your supervisor, because 'Messenger' is something to do with it, ... in some of
those corps. Be cautious before doing 'Disable.'

If this, above doesn't help any, please post us back.

Hi:
I re-read your thread/post and found that you did the one I suggested in my
previous response to yours.

Then, try this, below:
The web-site is as follow:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and scroll all down and can find the #95 that should disable 'Messenger,'
because of this, I removed it successfully.

Sorry, .... for confusion.

The "Messenger" service is not related to MSN Messenger, disabling the service could cause a myriad of problems that will be difficult to track down later.

I never use messenger, and always disable it, uninstall it. It causes no ill effects for most people. just microsoft scaring you.
from messenger bar:
tools/options/preferences/ uncheck load at startup

How to Stop Outlook or Outlook Express
from Running Windows Messenger When They Are Opened

Outlook
1) Open Outlook
2) Click on Tools, Options
3) Click "Other" tab
4) Uncheck the box for Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook
5) Click OK

Outlook Express
1) Open Outlook Express
2) Click Tools, Options
3) Click General tab
4) Uncheck the box for Automatically log on to Windows Messenger
5) Click OK

peterr: the steps to remove it from the registry are well documented, and I think you DO have the skill to do that. Considering some of the other things you have done, it should be a piece of cake.

I don't use it either (I use Trillian, have for years), but the messenger service he was talking about has nothing to do with MSN.

I haven't deleted MSN (it's only 2mb), as I don't run anything that tries to load it. Outlook doesn't, even Media Center no longer loads it.

windows messenger

M.S. newsgroups seem to agree that disabling/removing can cause trouble for some people.
To remove the icon go to 'addresses' at the top and delete the contacts.

Google 'kill the messenger' . You should find a site (I forgot it) that has a free program that does exactly what you think it should (kill the Messenger).

EDIT: I found it ...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/04/08/the_best_way_to_kill/

This is, of course, assuming you want to completely remove it from your system.

win messenger icon

I read removing the messenger may cause problems as it is part of windows.
To safely remove the icon go to addresses and remove your contacts.
Thank you for the research.
