Vista and flash drives

just found out about this today. Gonna try it out tomorrow for a few days and see how it goes.

Get more out of your Windows Vista™. Simply take a 512MB USB flash memory device and your computer can utilize the additional external device to enhance your performance.

Windows ReadyBoost™ can make PCs running genuine Windows Vista more responsive by caching key system information on a USB flash drive or other flash memory form factor. This helps speed performance because the flash memory can often be accessed more quickly than the hard disk.

As I understand it, you need high speed memory chips for it to work.. High speed photo memory..

I guess when you plug the device in (or card) Vista scans it and checks it's speed. If it's fast enough, it pops up and asks if you want to use it for memory. i'm sure the low cost drives won't be fast enough.

Are they seriously suggesting a USB port is faster than on board RAM or a hard drive?

I don't care how fast the chip is, it still has to go through the USB port.

They are just trying to give a cheap alternative to high-end memory sticks. From what I remember in the evals, you can not have anything else on the key in order for it to work. But for me, it worked pretty slick.
