disconnect from internet
I was reading MS newgroups and there were alot of suggestions as to how to keep your pc safe if you have cable and leave it for a fair period of time.
I could not really understand most of them but they raised the question in my mind so I'm checking here to see if someone can suggest the easiest way to get off the internet w/o turning off the pc and be able to come back and ?click something and be back on the internet.
Thank you

internet safety
My last post was not very informative-sorry.
There is a switch on the mondem that says,"Internet-on or off."
Would this also interrupt the online status?
Thank you

If you have PPPOE or another interned dialling app, there should be a way to disconnect. If you have a router, you can tell it to disconect. Otherwise there is no real reason to.

I do not know what the letters stand for. I have a router and a cable modem as described in a previous post.
I was just looking for an easy way to take the little extra added step of security w/o manualy unscrewing etc. The modem box has that a convenient "internet - on/off switch" provides that.
For learning purposes, could you tell me what those leters in your message mean?
Thank you.

PPPOE, is a means that broadband providers sometimes use to authenticate a user to let them use their broadband connection.
Wanting to "disconnect" if you have a router, especially a recent one, is a little paranoid IMO. I don't "disconnct" and I have had no security troubles.

PPPOE stands for: Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet (basically a particular type standard for machine communications).
Disconnecting when not using the "internet" is a personal choice very similar in nature to the age-old question of should you turn your computer off at night. Everyone has their own thoughts and opinions. Neither is right or wrong, but if you have a on/off switch right there, hey...why not?

Yes, everyone has their own opinion on this subject.
However, if your computer is not physically connected to the Internet and is not connected via a modem, then nobody can access your machine remotely.

I turn my machine on in the morning, and turn it off at night.. I have never touched the standby switch on my cable modem, and have never had an intrusion in nearly 10 years..
