Windows XP spontanously restarts

I am using Windows XP home with Service Pack 2 and all of a sudden my computer spontaneously restarts.

I was using the computer for a few hours today and went to have dinner. When I cam e back, I loaded a game, one I have had for years and recently decided to replay, and then the restarting happened. I can log into windows and if I let it sit for about 10-15mins, it will restart, if I try to do anything on it it restarts. I tried to run my virus scan, but it only made it for about 5mins before it restarted. I tried safe mode twice. The first time windows did not load, the second it restart as I tried to open my virus scanner. I have not loaded any hardware or software recently. A box comes up that states "a serious error has occurred" but when I try to report it it, windows can not find a file. what could be causing this and any ideas on how to fix it?

I forgot. I also did a few system restores, and that did not help.

I found something online that said to disable auto restarts so that I could get an error message. I tried to turn my computer on and it would not start. at one point i got the following message:

Windows NT has not found enough extended memory. 7mb of extended memory is required to run windows NT. You may need to upgrade your memory or run an configuration program by the manufacture.
Memory map
00000000-0009fc00
00100000-00110000

Now it just has a black screen. I gather from this message that my memory might be toast. is that correct? does this affect my HDD?

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and
Stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000011, 0x000000FF, 0x00000000, 0x804e35e9)

I will not wait to hear from some one.

Sounds like a bad RAM chip or other hardware.

Open your system up and remove one of the RAM chips if you have more then one.

If your system does not restart after removing one, you found that bad memory.

Try Mark's suggestion on the RAM chips, that's an easy, no cost trouble shoot.
Next place to look is the power supply (about $50), then the CPU.

Heat will also cause this problem. Are all the fans working? How much dust is covering the components inside your PC? Or it could be just be some bad memory as you have found.
