yahoo I.M turned my microphone on..how do I shut it off

Hi everyone,

I was on my IM and I accidently hit a button to make an internet call. The speakers went out and I hear static. I shut down my pc and restarted it and the speakers are still on..I still hear the 'static'. I have my pc on mute because it is REALLY annoying. What can I do?

Look in the bottom right corner of your screen in the system tray. Double click the speaker.

Find the slider labeled microphone and click the mute button.

Question

I did that and I cannot get to the system tray. I right click and I see stuff like, 'task manager', 'lock the task bar' 'properties' I don't see a microphone icon. I opened up the actual task manager but I don't know which one is the microphone..hmm...

WinXP? The little speaker icon should be on the lower right of the screen next to the time. Double-click on it, don't right click. A single left click will bring up only the volume.

Another way to get there is to click Start/Control Panel. Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices. In the Volume section under Device Volume, click on Advanced. This should bring up the mixer, where you can mute the mic.
