iPod help

Hello,
I have a working 2nd Gen iPod (20 Gig) and a semi-broken 3rd Gen iPod (40 Gig) and I've determined that the problem with the 3rd Gen iPod is the mainboard. The hard drive works, but the iPod can't seem to access it's own files, even after several attempts at reformatting. Since I would rather use the newer iPod, is it possible to pull out the mainboard from the older one and put it in the newer one? My concern is the difference in the inputs- the 3rd Gen has the clickwheel while the 2nd Gen has the four buttons below the screen.
Thanks.

I have never actually done it and am not sure if it is possible, however here are a couple of websites that may offer some help...

http://www.ipodhowtovideo.com/

http://www.ipodrepairguide.com/

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/

You also my want to find a forum dedicated to IPODs and ask them, you might find somebody who can help you with more specific instructions.
