format help

format help

hi.......
i am reinstalling the operating system on my laptop due to some problems ive been having. i formated one of the partitions no problem but when i went to format the main drive i kept getting an error message saying "cant format the drive, please close all running programs and try again" I did this, even started it up in safe mode and i still keep getting this message. Anybody got any suggestions?????? toshiba notebook,, xp operating system....

That's because you are using that partition and the OS doesn't want to destroy itself..

You said u deleted one of the partions. If thats the one you were having problems with why would you want to delete the "main" partition. As far as I know you cant format the same partition that is active. Theres many o ways to do it but why not repair it?

You cannot format the main partition unless you boot from the CD (or some other source).

Is this windows XP?., if so you must restart the laptop with the windows XP disc in the drive, and when it detects the Disc, you must hit a key for it to bootup into a blue type of Dos rather the old black screen in Dos.

Then follow the prompts to format Drive C.
