drive not recognized

I am running a laptop with Windows XP on it. My son received an mp3 player for his birthday which has a USB cable with it and no software. I plugged the device in to a USB port and initially when I first plugged it in at the bottom it said " new hardware found" and then the name of the device which was correct. However, when I go to my computer it does not show the new drive so I have no place to copy the files to. Any idea how to get this drive to show up. Thanks for the help.

For some unknown reason, my laptop does the same thing at times when I am using a USB thumb drive. When this happens, I just type E: in Windows Explorer, and it comes up. Windows will usually assign the next available drive letter to a USB drive.
