NTLDR is missing

Just out of the blue my computer started getting this messages (NTLDR is missing) at start up and would just stop there.

I tried reinstalling the operating system on another hard drive on the same computer; it locked up. After two attempts, now the PC won't power up at all.

BTW, the original hard drive is good in that I can plug a USB to IDE cable into it and transfer files onto another computer, so at least I can recover my data.

Just trying to figure out what happened to my computer?

Could be many things, but if the computer doesn't even power on, your motherboard is prolly toast. Try removing the Hardrive cables from the mobo and power on.

Here's some reading in the mean time;

Mark,
I did what you told me to try (remove the hard drive cable and power on.) NOTHING!

But; I also noticed part of the motherboard circuit board actually looks burned as do a couple of the components in that area.

So I'd say......yeah, probably is a failed motherboard. I took the memory out and tested it in another computer and it's okay; so is the hard drive. I'm sure the CD/DVD drives and the graphics card is good too.

I think with a new motherboard and processor; this PC should be back in action in no time.
But now comes the bigger question? Should I go with Vista or XP?

If you don't need Vista, stay with XP..

There are so many things that don't work with Vista yet. And with Microsoft's track record of bugs, holes and leaks, I'm going to wait longer. I have no problems with XP, that can't be solved with other programs, like firewalls and anti virus.
