Canon PIXMA printer problem

I have a Canon inkjet printer, it is the PIXMA ip1600. The ink ran out and I bought a refill kit and refilled both the color and black cartridges. I put them back into the printer and it will not print. The orange light is flashing 4 times which means ink has run out. Is there a way to reset the printer so that I can print with it again?

Right now when I try to print I get a pop-up: http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x217/lynniechabot/canon.jpg

It's quite frustrating. I already tried unplugging power as well as unplugging USB - neither action did anything. Don't think I will be buying another Canon printer if I can't reset it!!!!

Have you clean the underside of the cartridges? The ink might have dryed up and sealed the bottom.

Yes, I cleaned the print heads on the underside with the cleaner that came with the kit. The ink is flowing fine (when I take the cartridges out and blot with paper towel the ink moves freely), I just can't get the error light to reset itself.

Refilling ink cartridges is something that some people swear by and something that others never do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The printer manufacturers don't want you to do it, so they make it difficult.

My advice is to only buy and use brand new cartridges.

If you are going to try to refill cartridges yourself, I suggest that you never do so more than a few times, and that you realize that occasionally you will not be able to make it work.
