Mix & Match RAM?

I'm planning to replace my 2 x 256 mb chips with a 1 GB stick. I have only 2 slots. Can I leave 1 of the 256 chips in place?

The ram is all DDR, PC 333 mhz.

eMachine H2642 (maximum 2 GB ram)
Windows XP Pro

I added a 512mb along with my original 128mb and had no problems - was pleasently suprised at how much better my pc worked

You might need to check and make sure you don't excede the RAM that your pc can use, mine has a 1gb maximum.

As far as I have read, I can run 2 GB. I remember running odd pairings in the 'old days' (2-3 years ago?) but that was with DIMM chips. No harm in trying I guess?

"Both of my chips are DDR SDRAM."

OK, I'm going to give it a try as soon as the chip arrives (on backorder).

Thanks mark

Also, thanks Axl for the tip on memtest86. After doing a bit of surfing, I found a memtest86+ (a 2007 version). Looks like a handy tool to have.

Just thought I would update everyone ...

... the new chip arrived today ... popped out the first 256 chip, replaced it with the new 1 GB ... I now have 1,256 mb of ram!

First try! No 'beep beep beep'.

I love it when things work out perfect

Thanks Axl (again) & Mark
