changing WMP file to MP2?

Can music that is copied from a cd into windows media player as a regular music file later be changed to an MP3 format. Or can it only be saved as an MP3 format when first ripping it from cd to WMP?

Google can be your friend here:

I saw a ton of programs, some may require purchasing, others are trials, etc.

Usually your CD burner software (Nero, etc.) has a setting that allows you to save audio CD tracks directly to MP3. If not, download a neat little freebie app called Audiograbber along with the Blade or Lame MP3 encoder.
