External hard drive using Windows 98SE?

I'm about to replace my Dell desktop which has Windows 98SE, and I'd like to back up the hard drive before transferring the data. (I know it sounds hopelessly backward, but the system has been very good!) Any thoughts? Many thanks.

My thought is, "Why would anyone want to do this?"

Just back up the data after you transfer what you want, and then keep the original drive to have around. You will then have three copies of your data, the original, the copy on your new system, and the backup copy you make from your new system.
