cull music files

I have a lot of music file on my hdd with many being duplicates. the songs show up in winamp with the same name length and similar quality, but the actual file names differ. So I am looking for a program that I can use to cull the files. I would like it to search by the name that shows up in winamp and be able to select the quality to search by. I could do this manually, but I am looking for a faster, easier way.

Are these the same file names, or fairly close? If so, can you move them all to a folder together, sort alphabetically, the delete the one you don't want? Seems like it would be fairly fast that way. Or am I missing something.

no they are not the same file names and many are very different from each other, yet are the same song. I thought about reading through them all and one by opening them, listening, and renaming. but I shave something like 4000 songs with maybe 1000 duplicates of those. I will get bored after a few hours.

And the same song is 2 different file sizes huh? Don't know any easy why to do it then. A little at a time I guess.

I _know_ there are tons of things out there that do similar things using the ID3 tags. I just don't know of any off the top of my head because I've never needed one. I guess I'd start searching the web.... "mp3 id3 duplicates" etc.

If nothing else you could have someone write you a custom app -- just depends how much your time is worth to you.

Can you sort them by Artist? Remove duplicates that way.

I just ran across this, and remembered this thread.

This program can compare and find similar (duplicate) MP3, WAV files. Files compared by content, ID3 tags and file names.

Seek and Destroy Music Duplicates is a tool for locating and removing duplicated music files.

It might be what you need.

Have a look at Windows Media Player ... Tools\Search for Media Files. You can specify all your drives or certain areas only.

I haven't used it extensively but I believe it will generate a catalog for you.
