AAAACK!!!!! Computer will not boot produces blue warning screen only. AAAACK!!

Hi.

Have a dell desk top. windows xp prof. Was working fine. The Mon am after you briefly saw the windows icon- switched to a blue screen with a warning of some kind that a threat was detected so you have to check virus scans etc and gave a bunch of numbers- However since you can never actually get the computer working- you can't actually do that.

tried to restore with the dell disk and other disk, still the screen still appears and cannot get access to hard drive or anything.

Any ideas.

AAAACK!!

Thanks. Arlene

Did you try booting in safe mode?

What exactly does the message state?

Yes tried rebooting in any mode it offered and a list came up on one of the tries- anything produced the same screen- quite a lot of writing- would have to go down and try to call it up again- basically it said a threat was detected so to protect system it shut down and if this was the first time you saw the screen you should shut down all virus scanning programs etc - however you could never get that far and of course the screen always popped up. Ever heard of this?

thanks

Arlene

OK- it is apparently called the Unmountable Boot Volume error message according to Dell:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following: SPCMDON.SYS (my note- not sure if this is the exact same as our)

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If your see this screen again, take the following steps:

check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed..... any way it sgoes on to say to disable things etc- but since it will never go on it is impossiblet o do that.

under Dell tech support it id's this screen and says it could be anyone of a number of problems including corrupt file system, hard drive cable issue, a BIOS configurations issue or a failing hard drive.

it says it can often be fixed by running a Repair from a Windows Recovery console (???) but not always

I think the hard drive itself passes all the tests.

Any ideas?

thanks

Put the install CD/DVD in the machine, boot to the disc, and do a repair installation.

You may need a new hard drive.

Sounds like your hard drive is dead.

First, however, open the computer and check the cables, etc.

Yes- now it is a question of how I can save anything on the hard drive. Does that mean I have to take it somewhere- how do you save data off a failed hard drive?

Thanks for your help

Install a new hard drive and re-install the OS.
Install the old drive as a slave.
Try to get the info off it.
