Networking a printer via a router

Hello,

I am trying to network a Brother 5460nc printer to a IBM thinkpad (Windows XP) via a Linksys router.

Can this be done? How?

Thanks,

Joey

Start - Printers and Faxes - Right click the printer - sharing.
Then add the printer to the laptop.

Network error message

Thanks for the quick response,

I typed a name for the printer and clicked Apply. Then, I received an error message "printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed"

Any thoughts???

Thanks,

Joey

Do you know what the ip address of the printer is? Do you even have one set on the printer?

Printer IP address

No,

I have the printer plugged into the same wireless linksys router that the laptop is connected to, but I don't know how to set up an IP address for the printer or check to see if it already has one.

How do I do that?

Thanks,

Joey

anyone Ive ever seen the printer needs a static address , you go into setup and assign one that fits your IP range (usually 192,168,x,x,

you can log into your router and see for sure

Just click start, run, they type cmd. It will bring up a DOS window. Type ipconfig and hit enter. This will show you the ip address that your computer has. Just take whatever it is and add say 20 to it. So if you're ip address is 192.168.0.100, make the printer ip address 192.168.0.120. Also, keep the subnet mask the same on the printer as it is on the pc, which will probably be 255.255.255.0, you will not need to enter a gateway address on the printer for it to work.

Could also plug a print server into the router. This is the one I use:

A print server is for a printer that doesn't have the capability to serve as a stand alone network printer .

the brother 5460nc is a network printer , just needs to be set up

Company firewall

Thanks guys,

I was able to actually network another computer to the printer but not my company laptop. I think it is some sort of company/Mcaffee firewall that is stopping me from doing this.
