Loud spinning when starting PC-???

Sometimes when I start PC I hear a loud spinning noise.
If I turn off PC for a few minutes usually the noise will stop when I start PC. does this sound like the fan is going bad??
Please advise--thanks in advance.

When you shut down the computer in the "normal" way (with the shutdown command) it doesn't shut off all power. When you start up it will generally not make the loud whirring but if you shut down and then unplug the computer it will start up with the loud whir.

If you have the computer plugged into a power strip and turn off the power strip or if you have a momentary power loss (either whole house or just the circuit the computer is plugged into) the computer will start with the loud whir.

It is nothing to worry about.

Furd: What the heck kind of computer do you own??

Howard: it could be a couple things.

Could very well be a fan going bad, when the bushings wear out they'll make quite a racket.
The other thing I was thinking it could be is maybe your cd rom drive is spinning up and (for some reason) not spinning back down.

Next time it does it, try opening your cd drives, that will eliminate that real quick.

You can also take the side of your computer case off and listen for the sound. If it seems like it's coming from a fan, gently touch the center of it with your finger to slow it down a little, you'll know right away if it's the fan or not.

Open the case and start it up. Listen to the fans. Keep the case off until you identify which one it is.

furd; that is totally wrong.

Wink

Pull the side cover off and check the fans. Some on the PIC boards fans cost only about $10.00. If its the one on the mother board make sure and clean out the heat sink under it real good then put the new fan on it If its the one in the power supply. The you have to get a new power supply. All of them are DIY stuff

I have a Compaq about two years old and a Hewlett-Packard about one year old so I guess you could say I have two H-P computers.

Both of them do exactly as I wrote. Always have.
