lost disconnect/connect prompt

My grand daughter by mistake checked "don't use auto connect" box in the prompt that asks "disconnect or stay connected" and I can't figure out how to get it back. Can anyone help. Windows XP SP2, IE 6, and I am on dialup. Thank you

I haven't used dialup in ages, but here is one location you should check on:

Start Menu | Settings | Network Connections

Then go to the Advanced menu and select "Dial-up Preferences...". In the top portion of that screen make sure autodial is checked for each of the locations that appear in the box. You may also want to check "Always ask me before autodialing" if that's how you want it to work.

That may do it. IE also has similar settings just for itself and I can dig those up too if need be.

Edit: Here's another thing to check: Settings | Control Panel. Click "Internet Options" the go to the Connections tab. Select your dialup connection in the box and then examine the settings there too.

Have you tried System Restore? Set it to the day before the change was made. On occasion, it can't restore to a certain day, but it's worth a try with nothing to lose, can't hurt.

You could go to the control panel, under system, and uninstall the telephone modem. Upon restarting, Windows will autodetect the modem and reinstall it. The go through the setup procedure again, selecting your desired settings.

Hope this helps.

When reinstalled, the device should spawn its installation wizard anew, so that all the settings can be made.
