Adding Memory

I would like to add more memory to my Dell Dimension 2400.
I have read conflicting instructions online about how to do this.
Presently I have 512 MB of ram occupying one slot in the comp.
I want to increase the RAM by another 1 MEG Some reports state that I should remove the 512 and place the 1meg in the number one slot.
Then put the 512 in the number 2 slot.
Other reports say I should leave the 512 out as both memory cards should match. What is correct.?
I would like to have as much RAM as I can.

If I were you. I would get a 1GB stick making sure it matches the type and speed of the old memory. Put the new 1 gig stick in slot one and move the old 512 stick to slot 2. If you notice your machine acting weird, pull the old 512 stick out first and see if that fixes the problem. If you're still having problems with just the 1 gig stick in, then your machine doesn't like that particular stick of memory and you may have to get a different brand.

Also, if your machine has a brand name on the memory thats in there, try to buy the same brand/type so they will be more compatible.

And before you go out and buy any, check the specs on your motherboard to see what the maximum amount is in each slot and in total.

I had major problems with Crucial mem even though their website picked it. Wound up with OCZ and couldn't be happier.
