Shut-down Errors
I have a Gateway GT4010 desktop PC running Windows XP.
When I shut the system down, I get 2 error messages. One says "fAIL?" and the other is "Card Reader Monitor 9630 4.5 Slot".
What is causing these errors and how can I fix them?

After the usual spyware and virus check, run system file checker. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

Go to download.com, and download hijack this. Install it and run the program. CLick on "Do system scan and save log file". When it is done it will open a notepad window with all the info in it. Copy and paste all that info into a message on here so we can see what's going on on your machine.

How many times a day do you shutdown your computer?
Sometime I get these screens & sometimes I don't on shutdown. They don't harm your computer. If you click ok
the machine shuts down.
You will drive yourself nuts trying to find them.
Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill................
Maybe I should have asked-----
Have you defraged HDD
Have you run both error checks: auto fix file errors & attempt recovery of bad sectors.
When is the last time you ran disk cleanup ???????????????????????????????/

The card reader popup is not surprising, as countless cheap card readers come with even junkier software. It should be possible to remove the sketchy card reader software and simply use Windows native drivers for "generic card reader". XP does not manage card readers/cameras well either, but it's probably better than 3rd party ...stuff. What do you have in taskbar?
The "fAIL?" message looks like cracker language and I would get right onto that as it might be a broken trojan. Did it really say "fAIL?" with just an "OK" button?

Making a mountain out of a molehill? I'm not.
I turn my computer on in the morning, and turn it off at night. If I have a problem, I know how to fix it.

Speaking of mountains--when I purchased this PC the DVD
burner would not work--it's a combo burner: CD & DVD.
The PC system said everything was working.
The Mfr. played me for 3 weeks w/ do this-do that....
They finally sent a guy out here & machine was repaired in 30 mi. They just hate to admit that their product is defective.
