system restore question

My Windows XP did a system restore today, but in doing so...my printer and audio devices aren't there.

How do I get them back?

Thank you!

Well, probably the easiest thing to do would be to just go to the manufacturer website and download drivers for them.

And some of my programs aren't on anymore....like paint shop pro 7 and adobe photoshop....

Do I need to add them again with the disc?

Okay.......but, why does a system restore? And, shouldn't there be backups somewhere?

Someone must have told it to do a restore, or really screwed something up.
Backups are only available if you make them.

So.....is this because somebody did something to my computer? Like send it a virus to crash?

You are saying XP did a system restore w/ out any help from
you-like it likes to do things by itself???
If you know a system restore took place--you must have been watching it happen.
How far back did it set your PC?

I watched it happen...I thought it was something that it was supposed to do.

I'm thinking maybe that my disc space was too full because the last prompt I got last night before shutting it off said that the memory was "too low" and that it would take care of it.

I don't know how far back it went because I don't know when the system restore point was. it says that it's suppose to restore it's self every day(?), but some of my programs that I've put on my pc---that didn't come with Windows XP---- are gone and need to be put back on.

This is the first time it's happened to me, so I'm confused.

Thank you and you have a good day now.

Open System Restore...

If no luck, undo or last earlier time (e.g. two days ago), then know System Restore effects mainly "just" the registry - you may find many files still intact.

I'm wondering

I would say that you would know it if you did a system restore. the way you do one is to boot to safe mode, a dialog box comes up and asks you, do you want to go to safe mode OR do a system restore and then you choose the day from a calendar that you want to restore from.

If your programs are missing, you may think about this. Maybe you are logged on as a different user and the programs are not showing up for you. Check that. Reboot and log on with the same old name and password you have been logging on as. If you still don't see the programs, open My Computer and your C drive and then Program Files and see if the folders still exist for Paint and photoshop. The exe files are in the folders under program files and you may be able to just pull up a shortcut.

You may have had a profile that has become corrupt. The message you said about the memory being low is curious. Memory is used to refer to RAM or your working space. Disk is your actual storage space. Is your hard drive too full? If your RAM was low, then you may have something going on that is causing your memory to not be freed up by an application. An occasionaly reboot will take care of this. Think about what happened and look at some of these things and maybe it will come together. If you think it could be a corrupt profile, post again and I will post some pointers on getting your life back together with a new profile.

Like kobuchi said-go Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore & see if you get lucky.
Like people-computers do strange things-I still find it hard to believe it ran off & did a System Restore w/ no help from anybody.
Have fun....................
PS: how often do you defrag-run both disk checks-disk cleanup?

I got it fixed...paid $145 for 6 more months of warranty on it. It restored back to 2003.

I lost programs and all updates. I'm still getting popups for this and that, but it's running up to speed.

Yeah, I defrag all the time. I check my disc space alot cause it's an older computer and I wanna keep it in good shape.

I'm not an IT person, but I know that I did not set a restore. I didn't even know what a restore was until now. Since I work outta my home, it's important that I have computer usage, so....regardless, I didn't not do a restore myself on my PC.

Why would I when I didn't even know what it was? There's one other person in the house that uses this PC...it could of been him.

But, whatever the case was......it's fixed, I'm TOTALLY updated with anti-virus and firewalls and all the latest updates for everything.

Thank you!

yes, I paid this $$$ to HP....of course. Who else would warranty it?

It's fixed, it runs and that's all that matters.
