That would be an "OK" deal if it was windows XP. That's gonna run like crap with vista.

I will keep looking. Any recommendations in the $300-500 price/features level?

Think I just saw a nice Toshiba for $499 after rebates in one of the big box store ads on Sunday; Circuit City, maybe.

You want at least 2 GB RAM for Vista and I've heard you don't want Home Basic. I agree to skip this one.

This is a better deal for a Gateway

http://www.buy.com/prod/gateway-m-63...208272748.html

Also check out this smokin' Dell deal
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...471&lid=730577

Runs silent and is a great machine. Will stand strong for years. Great box for the $$$$$

If you are looking for extreme value I would go into the Dell outlet and see if you can find something that suits you.

Processor for me would need to be at least core 2 duo and 2GB RAM if I am running Vista. They are several like this which would be well under 500

Dollar for dollar I am getting the quad core.....

find someone to build you a custom machine. you will get what you want/need. and no spyware hp dell and gateway install on their machnes. if you MUST buy one of their machines get a copy of xp pro, wipe the drive clean, and do a fresh install. I built a smokin machine for a friend with 4 gig ram and a 528 mb video card for under $300 bucks. Then I installed the software he NEEDS and he is so happy.

Ah the misinformation.

Dells and HP's are fine for most people. If you know how to use "add/remove programs" in the control panel, you can remove anything installed on the machine that you don't want on there.

If you built a "smokin" machine with those specs for $300, then you didn't include the price of a copy of windows.

Coincidentally, we ended up getting this deal. Very nice machine.

Now I'm on to tackling the wireless home network!

I'll be back....
