start up/intializing program freeze up!

toshiba satellite a45-s151
pentium 4
windows xp.

i recently turned on my laptop & after begining the welcome process a box pops up that says "userinit.exe-Application Error" & says "the application failed to intialize properly(0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application." i tried to close the box & click ok but nothing happens.

what should i do or not do?

the only other thing i have tried is going to the windows task manager & it lists the userinit.exe-application error as running...any suggestions would be appreciated. don't have the monet or the time to take it to a computer store.

thanks,

kize mo

Press F8 while it's booting. Then "Safe mode"
When at the desktop, click on Start - Programs - Startup
Delete whatever is there, or the program you know is giving the problems.

tried that but...

have made progress! however in the safe mode i get to the part where it loads personal settings & all looks good until that same failure to intialize prompt jumps up on the safe mode screen...anything else i can do ?

anything in that safe mode menu that might help me w/o erasing my hard drive?
