Computer doesn't see cd drives

I am running xp and all of a sudden my 2 cd drives do not show up. I do have power, but do not see them on "my computer". I also do not see them in dos prompt. I have check all connections and all looks good, I tried start, run and e:/ says unavialalble. What else can I check?

Check your ribbon cables. Perhaps one is loose. If not, try replacing it with another to ensure that the ribbon cable is ok.

Run both disk checks--if they don't show up--go the cable route from rbwest................
