xp install crashes

I have formated and am reinstalling a version of xp pro on a computer that has had this same version on it before. The setup runs fine through the first 3 steps then about half way through installing windows devices, the screen goes black and the installation process stops. This computer worked the day before. Any suggestions?

Try a different disc or cd rom drive.

Perhaps your hard drive is failing. Run a chkdsk or another utility that can check your drive if you can.

Ribbon cables can cause intermittent problems and the same goes as to what Toofer said.

Have you installed a new video card since the last XP install? If the motherboard has on-board video and you've installed a video card, the install may be using the VGA or DVI spigot that you're not plugged into. See if you can disable the on-board video in the BIOS setup.

Has anything else changed?

Unplug everything (printer, scanner, router, USB peripherals except mouse & keyboard). When XP finishes, plug them back in one and load drivers one at a time.
