Vista boot failure

Toshiba satellite laptop, model a205
Windows Vista

Approximately a year old; status of virus software is unknown.

I'm trying to troubleshoot a computer that I was not operating when the problem occurred: our son was playing a "browser game" at a website when the computer froze. He shut it down and attempted to restart. The computer presents a recovery screen and indicates "choose an operating system to recover" but the dropdown list is empty.

I get this when I try to restart in Safe mode as well.

I ran this at a command prompt:
rstrui.exe /offline:c:\windows
(an attempt to restore to a previously good instance of Vista)
...but got the same results at boot attempt.

Any thoughts / suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave O

Was it F8 that you used to try to get to safe mode? If not try F8 and choose last known good config and/or safe mode. Sometimes F12 or F11 can give you another boot menu. If none of that works, reset the BIOS back to defaults. At last resort, try a boot disk.
