Win98? That's almost as old as the abacus....
Try this:
FREE antivirus software for Windows with anti-spyware protection: avast! Home Edition

I have 3 computers each with a different operating system; 98, XP and Vista. 98 has the least problems just as the abacus had!!! I want to thank you for finding the best FREE Anti Virus I have ever used.

I also have a '98 FE. Had to bring it out of mothballs due to failed motherboard on my Dell laptop.
It seems to have a virus.......something has grabbed about 50% of my processor.
Is their anything online I can use to clean out this virus.........for free.........???????
I can always blow it away and reload but looking for alternatives.

(applies to all rather than some of the posts here, I think)
..............
install the free version of look N stop
go to snapfiles.com and find, install *two* antivirus
clean the system with the antivirus
(if you have enough memory you can run 2)
decide if you want to upgrade look N stop
find a 2nd firewall (besides either free/paid lookNstop) and
install/run it
now if you have 2 firewall, 2 antivirus, if programs are
too slow, deinstall the most memory-hungry one.

I had a laptop with WIN98SE on it up until about a year ago when the whole thing died. I never ran any anti-virus on it other than occasionally scanning with Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware. I never picked up any virus.
I ran this laptop on both dial-up and cable broadband for many years. Yes, I also visited some "questionable" websites. What I didn't do is to open E-mails from unknown senders or download a lot of "trial" programs or music.
I suppose some time my day will come when I really do get hit by a virus but so far it hasn't happened.
