sharing drives on computers

Bear with me as I have only done this once before quite a while ago and it is not working this time. I purchased a new computer and have it linked to the older one via ethernet cables and a switch. I have IP's set differently in both and sharing is enabled in both pc's and firewalls are off. Both say local connection is connected. If i go to the new computer and go under run and type the IP address\c of the old it comes back and asks me for a username and password which I have no idea what this is ( I am assuming you need this to access the old computer). If I go to run on the old pc and type in the IP of the new computer\c it comes back and error immediiately that it can't be found. Any other reccommendations on how to share these and also if I am doing it properly is there any way to figure out what the username/password is for the old pc. Thanks

What operating system(s) are you using on the 2 computers?

The easiest way to fix this. Make sure there are passwords set on the user accounts on both pcs (especially if one is Vista). Then when you go to type in the name of the other pc, do it like this: \\pcname\c$ (add the dollar sign at the end). Then when it asks you for a username and password, use the one of the account on the pc you're trying to get to.

Hope that makes sense.
