A Beta test version was available for download on the MS site, but they took it down awhile ago. I never bothered to check if they put up another version.

I got the Windows 7 beta, liked it and stuck with it. Now running the Windows 7 RC1 (release candidate). Also pre-ordered two copies of it for $50 each.

It runs quite well, but I am running it on a custom build machine with an Intel Core i7 CPU, 12gb RAM and ATI Radeon 4870 1gb video.

I can honestly say that is despise Vista. My father and friend have it and it makes me angry every time I use it. Windows 7 is Vista-like, but I think it is a compromise between XP and Vista in speed and usability.

The target release date is October 10th. I would imagine the new-machine bundles will be in place by Christmas.

Yeah, my wife's 3 year old Dell blew out an LCD light, so it was either $300 to fix it or $400 for a new one. The new one, to my chagrin, has Vista, BUT, the guy at the computer store told me there was a free upgrade in October to "7". We'll see.

Having Beta Tested Win7, I can say that it runs quite fast, as fast, if not faster, than Windows XP.

Win 7 is pretty much what Vista should have been had they spent a bit more time on it.

However, if you've got a PC/Laptop with Windows XP on it, I wouldn't bother upgrading to Windows 7 - just isn't worth all that much.

If you have Vista however, an Upgrade to Windows 7 is vital for your sanity

After some digging, I found out it was just the light inverter, which is not rocket science to replace. Replacement part about $20. So I guess I'll get her old one to replace my even older one. Computer guys make it easy to buy a new one, by pricing the fix too far out for the commoner to believe. C'est la vie.

Why all the hatred for Vista? I have two computers for a year now running Vista, and I haven't had any issues. I have XP on my computer at work, and I never could see much difference between the two. I'm perfectly happy with Vista....its working better than my 98SE ever did.

I'm using the RTM build (MSDN Technet) I never even tried the Beta or the RC builds but anyway I am loving W7. I totally ditched my XP OS. My only gripe is the amount of space just the OS itself takes up. XP was only about a gig of space but W7 uses like 15 Gigs just for the OS itself

So what makes Windows 7 Ultimate so much better than Windows XP?

I'm not a geek and I don't do gaming. What might I gain with the new OS? Quite honestly, I didn't notice that much improvement with XP or 98SE. Better connectibility with the USB, faster transfer with USB 2.2 and the inclusion of the photo editor were the main points as I remember. Oh, yeah, I guess that XP has a movie editor function that I should try some day.
