by chance did you start-up and go to your moniter/screen options and see if anything reset, or got changed. like
if a virus or spyware changed settings.

i got a bad virus once and it changed my desktop and wouldn`t let me access the properties or task manager to change it back.

I'm going through the same thing with a Dell D800. The display goes dark after boot up. First thought is the inverter, located on the screen. It boosts voltage to excite the lamps. Changed that ($12), nope. Next is to either change out the lamps (2 x $10 ea) or buy a tested screen assembly ($80). Door #2 sounds inviting. At least I won't have to tear down the screen again.

I had a thinkpad do that and I just put it on a docking station with a 17" monitor and keyboard and got a couple more years of use that way
