Question c/d-dvd-inopp

I am 'not' very well vers'd on a p/c!
as of this week, my c/d-dvd-drives do not work, the trays open & close there is a green lite visible in the tray,so I think it is connected (per the troubleshoot, option of windows)
when i put a c/d in the loader,it used to start by it self. now,nothing!-same with dvd!
c/d diagnostics-code 41(emachines-T2542)
windows'trouble shoot-'no further help'
several months ago,the machine locked up,i used the restore c/d to clean the hard drive & reinstall windows-x/p-re loaded the web sites i had lost.it had been working ok,untill i tried to use the c/d to install a didgital camera c/d.that is when i discovered that it no longer worked.
I have tried to up date the drivers,-no updated-available.

'any one'! have any advice/suggestions?

Put in an audio CD. Go to My Computer and see if "Audio CD" shows up. If so, double click it. What happens?

in 'my computer' the c/d & dvd drives are not there.
!diagnostics/ trouble shoot comes up with this!
(Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

go to control panel and select "add hardware" let it run and see
if device manager recognizes the cd rom as being there but not installed.
since you rolled back you will have to install the hardware not just the drivers and software end of it.

Repeated Error 41's after trying all of the software fixes and checking the cabling (were you inside the machine immeditately before it stopped working?) usually means the drive is toast. Replacement drives can be bought for well under $50 and installed in under an hour.

CD/DVD drives burn out, it's how it goes. It isn't incredibly common, but it happens. You could probably pick up a replacement at newegg.com and install it with ease.

the dvd drive is about 1 yr old(i installed it)/sony-dvd/rw
the c/d is what came with the machine(6 yr old)
yesterday,i took the side off-nothing loose.tried-unpluging both drives-turn off machine & back on/off reconnect restart/
download trial version of 'nero'.still inopp.
with the side off, when a c/d is inserted, you can hear it slightly start to spin-dvd-nothing-just lites on the trays.
since both drives use the same ribbon cable that has 2 connectors, dothese cables 'go bad'/or possible mother board.
i have already had to install an ethernet card(the ethernet connection on the mother board failed)
due to the machine being out dated-mother board-not serviced
