Winlogon.exe Problem.....BSOD

For the last month or so when I shut down I'll get the BSOD with an error message, it reboots and we try again. Usually after 3 trys it'll shut down. Happened about once a week, not every time.

Today I got the message on start up, first time. It says:

"Faulting application winlogon.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module uxtheme.dll, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x00001330"

Clicked on the send/don't send thingie and it works fine.

Anyway, on another forum (from 2007) someone said to download a new uxtheme.dll and replace the old one.

Any danger to this? I haven't ever messed with dll files but I'll try anything once. Beer 4U2

About 8 years old.

Thanks,

Baldwin

You can try to replace the .dll but I would download, update & run anti malware from malwarebytes.org first.

Thanks. I forgot I had malwarebytes installed on my computer.

I ran the quick scan last night and a full scan today.....both showed no problems.

I haven't tried the dll thing yet, "before winter" projects to be done.

Thanks,

Baldwin

Did you update it before you ran it?

Yes, both times. You wouldn't happen to know where I can get a good dll, not one with bad stuff in it? I know nothing about this stuff.

Thanks

I did a little research & you may just want to install SP3 instead, which takes that dll out of the picture OR there is a patch for SP2, if you don't want to install SP3.

Download UXTheme Patch For Windows XP SP2 Final - Now you can use any theme for Windows XP with SP2 Build 2180 - Softpedia

Not sure why I didn't install SP3 but I think I'll do that in the morning.

I spent a couple hours this morning reading about downloading a dll and I think I'll pass on that plan. Seems that error could be just a beginning of what is really wrong.

Thank you,

Baldwin

Week and a half since I installed SP3 and not a single error.

Thank you very much.

SP3 was the supposed "final" upgrade that included all of the security patches, bug fixes, and updates to the XP operating system before MS put XP to bed. When it first came out it caused more problems than it cured. But now that XP is at the end of its life cycle, SP3 is necessary -- and stable.

Guess I should have added, "knock on wood." Ten minutes after writing I shut it down for the night and there was the same error only at a different address.....whatever that means.

Faulting application winlogon.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module uxtheme.dll, version 6.0.2900.5512, fault address 0x00001375.

Hmmm....I see the version is different too.

Now what?

Thanks
