Kaspersky vs McAfee

Hello all. Looking for opinions. My Kaspersky runs out in a week. My internet provider (cable) offers free McAfee. Should I renew Kaspersky or just go with McAfee (free). I am also running Malware Bytes and Spyware Terminator.
P.S. At the time I bought Kaspersky I didn't have this current provider so I didn't have access to the free McAfee

on all my systems and other systems i work on
all are free and work well

 

My preference is to use AVG Free. I had problems with my systems running slow with McAfee. Using AVG, AdAware, MalwareBytes, SpywareBlaster and SpyBot S&D, I've never had any sort of infection issues for years. Only time I had issues was back when my stepson and his friends would get on the machine and just load whatever they wanted.

 

I use Avast, Spybot and Malwarebytes (all free) and they keep my system very safe.
I used to have Norton and talk about s-l-o-w! I used to use McAfee, too, and not much better.

 

In compute forums I have seen posts from people who do computer repair for a living say they love it when people install McAfee or Norton. When the people bring the computer in complaining how slow and un responsive it is they can may big bucks and end up with a satisfied customer just by removing McAfee or Norton and installing free software. Some have called the big two anti-virus softwares viruses themselves, In fact Norton use to dig its self in so deep you had to use special programs to clean the system of it.

Of course the best solution is to use an operating system that doesn't need AV software, or have a registry, or needs the hard drive defragged on a regular bases.

 

An operating system that doesn't need AV software???? What planet is that on???

 

BTW using XP with 1 Gig Ram.

 

This one. Neither Mac or Linux need them unless they are on a Network with Windows machines and that is to protect Windows machines not Mac or Linux.

I think you may have been mislead by the MS commercials which mistakenly indicate a PC is always a Windows machine. It isn't. There are many free operating systems that would work fine on your system and not require an AV.

The easiest way to try Linux is as a live CD. That means it runs from your CD or DVD without even booting into Windows. There are many flavors of Linux and while some are not for the novice many are as easy or easier to use then Windows. Once you get a feel for Linux you can install it as a dual boot with Window. If you want to try a Live CD you just download it in ISO form from the internet and burn to a CD or DVD, I can give you some links if your interested.

Ray, that's why the computer guy gave me the grin when I bought my wife's new computer. I told him if I even smelled McAfee or Norton, I'd be back.

Tell you all what. I am going to try McAfee. (what the Heck..it's free) If it is that bad I will uninstall (like a shot) and go with AVG which I have had in the past. I just wasn't sure how good it could be if it was free
P.S. I don't game at all... I just surf and I also do my banking online. If it helps my security at all I use Firefox. Is this a good thing??

 

You can do what you want, but McAfee will take over your computer and you will have to uninstall it one piece at a time. Very difficult to do. It doesn't like other programs that try to do the same job. Firefox is an excellent browser, less prone to problems like IE8 is.

 

I tried installing the free McAfee from Comcast a few years ago and it was a disaster. It didn't fully install and I couldn't get it to uninstall. I finally had to do a complete wipe of the hard drive and re-install everything BUT the McAfee.

I also use the AVG free and have had no problems.

 

Well..in an about-face I renewed Kaspersky. It slowed me down some. Even worse than before which I don't think was that bad. As I use it it seems to be getting faster ...Learning?. Anyway it is different so I need to tinker and find the things to turn OFF to speed up. I am up for suggestions.
P.S. there is even a delay when using computer when not on line. i.e. when I go up to "file" and push it (say...to exit) there is a delay before the drop down box shows itself.
Only adults here so only want it to stop viruses and protect passwords, banking, etc. Don't need it to monitor content, spam, etc.

 

Hey guess what..just messing around with settings. I disabled Spyware Terminator while running Kaspersky in "full" mode. Sped everything up a few dozen notches. Didn't have this problem before with the two of them. I will just keep Spyware Terminator turned off and then turn on for update and scan. Also in reference to other post I updated to latest version of firefox and am still looking for answer to getting a "get mail" icon somewhere up next to the "back" button and have it open Outlook Express

 

I've been using Firefox for a very long time, and I have never seen a mail icon for Outlook on it. Don't know why they would have an icon for a Microsoft Office product, anyway, since they are in competition for the browser market.

 

it wasn't the OE icon. It was just a general mail icon which was in firefox somewhere (at least it was) when I clicked on it there were 2 choices 1. "Get mail" and 2. I forget. When I clicked on the icon and then clicked "get mail" it immediately opened OE right over top of what page I was on and I got/sent/whatever until I closed and then my original page was "under" it. I had it this way for a while and pretty sure someone here instructed me how to "link it up". Anyway most of this is in my other post
