Defrag the system and empty the cache. Are you running McAfee or Norton? If so, there's your slow up.

Also if you are running windows XP you can change the settings so as to have less eye candy. It may look like windows 98 if you turn it all off but at least the computer will run faster. I am not sure how much you can cut back on Vista, but I am sure they would have kept this feature in it too.

Goto Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" [enter]

Disable unwanted or unrecognized junk (check hide all microsoft services) in the "Services" and "Startup" Tab. Reboot PC. Don't worry, your computer should still startup fine even with everything unchecked. You can always go back and re-enable them.

Don't have more than one antivirus / antispyware program. They themselves are giant bloatware.

If you have lots of RAM, you can turn off Paging.

Right Click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> [Performance] Settings -> Advanced Tab -> [Virtual Memory] Change -> Set to No paging file.

Hard Disk access is in milliseconds, RAM access is in nanoseconds. Go figure However, if you run out of memory, you may BSOD.

I did this the computer sent a pop up saying I am running out of memory & that I may need to learn how to deal with this..
but thanks a bunch everyone who posted I tried everything mentioned here & it is helping speed the computers up a lot
especially the ones mentioned about msconfig

virus program doesn't work

I found my virus program doesn't work
when I put down all microsoft services(msconfig)
it sure speeds the laptop up thou..it's
just that a person needs to restart the computer
again with a normal start if they want to get virus updates and
run the scans

Well, if you don't have enough RAM (512 mb for the OS + however big your applications are going to be.. so safe bet would be 1Gb at minimum); don't turn off paging. I'd turn off paging if I have 2gb+

As for the virus updates, just find that antivirus service and re-enable it. From that startup tab in the msconfig, expand the Command column (dragging that " | " title bar to the right) and it should roughly tell you what those items are based on directory name. If you use symantec antivirus, then just re-enable the any items with symantec path in it.

Most malware and ad-bots are loaded as startup services, so disabling them will give you a nice performance boost back to normal speed.

I think most folks lack Ram so this idea will never work
turning off paging

RAM is so cheap nowadays, unless you need super fast RAM for overclocking. I got my 4Gb Ram (DDR2) around ~$20 after $20 Mail in Rebate, and that was 2 yrs ago...

You can use the list here to find the necessary start up programs you really need.

Windows startup programs. What are they? Are they required? How can I disable them?

Programs automatically re enable themselves when run. You need something like startup mechanic to permanently disable them. It also gives a description of each prog for you. Be careful not to disable explorer or your av.

some programs will re enable themselves, but most will not.
I have about 25 programs disabled that have not returned on their own.
